It is only required to specify the intention before dawn, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: \u201cWhoever does not have the intention of fasting before dawn, then there is no fast for him\u201d [Reported by An-Nasa\u2019i]. However, it should be noted that each day should have a specific intention, as most scholars of jurisprudence have concluded. The Maliki school of thought holds that if a Muslim intends at the beginning of the month to fast for the entire month, then their fasting is valid.
