This stems from al-Azhar&#8217;s role in preserving the Holy Quran and its sciences and spreading Islamic culture as well as moderation. It is worth noting that Somalis are extremely keen on teaching their children to read the Quran. The first thing they do is enroll their children in memorization circles spread in Masjids. This has been a long-standing tradition in many parts of the Islamic world until recently. This is achieved through holding an annual celebration for distributing excellence awards for best graduates such as the best Master\\u2019s and Ph.D. and theses awards in the field of Islamic Sciences. This is done after an academic committee chooses among the best theses that obtained the degree of excellent with honors.
