Prof. Shouman Discusses “Features of Renewal in Islamic Thought” in a Lecture to Somali Imams<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prof. Abbas Shouman, President of the Organization and Secretary-General of the Council of Senior Scholars, stated that renewal in Islamic thought is one of the essential requirements of our tolerant Shariah. It is inseparable from Shariah, without it, Shariah cannot keep pace with people’s needs and demands. Thus, the decisive provisions in Islamic law that do not allow for change are very few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Furthermore, Prof. Shouman emphasized that anyone who studies the history of Islam and understands the provisions of its Shariah realizes that Islam is a dynamic, evolving religion, even in its approach to guiding people. The pillars of Islam and its fundamental obligations were not revealed to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) all at once. Islam began with one central pillar: the oneness of Allah and faith in His Messenger, represented in the two testimonies. Gradually, the rest of the pillars were introduced, interspersed with guidance on prohibitions, conduct, and ethics, until the religion was fully completed before the death of the Prophet (PBUH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was part of a lecture titled “Features of Renewal in Islamic Thought,” delivered as part of the course “Dismantling Extremist Thought,” organized by the World Organization for al-Azhar Graduates in cooperation with al-Azhar International Academy for Training Imams, Preachers, and Fatwa Researchers, for a group of Somali Imams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Additionally, the President of the Organization explained that the gradual establishment of the pillars and principles of Islam represents a form of renewal. Islam did not remain confined to one period or a specific stage; instead, a second and third pillar were introduced over time, until the religion was completed with its obligations and Sunnah. Each phase thus represented a new manifestation of Islam, building upon, rather than replacing, the previous one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His Eminence reviewed various forms of renewal throughout Islamic history, emphasizing that renewal has specific guidelines and conditions. He added that renewal must be undertaken only by specialists and its rules and principles must be carefully observed. Only those who are deeply knowledgeable are qualified to carry it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In conclusion, he emphasized that the renewal process in Islamic thought is ongoing and began during the era of prophecy, continuing through the time of the Companions and their successors, up to the present day. This process will persist until Allah inherits the earth and all who are on it. This is Allah’s Sunnah in the universe, a principle accepted in our Shariah and an established fact in the history of Islam.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
