WOAG headquarters in Cairo held an intensified online training course for 14 Lebanese imams and preachers under the title of “How to Prepare a Mufti”, in cooperation with Al-Azhar Academy for Training Imams and Preachers. The course included a lecture themed “Mufti’s Fundamental Skills” given by Dr. Emad al-Halabi, Instructor at the Faculty of Sharia and Law, al-Azhar University, who highlighted that a Mufti should possess a full knowledge of the Quran and Sunnah.
He stressed that a Mufti has to consider the fundamental Fiqh rules, to be familiar with auxiliary and linguistics sciences, and Sharia objectives, and take into consideration the positive and negative consequences of his Fatwas. He added that a Mufti should apply the Fiqh of Balance while defining good and evil and respect people’s customs and conditions, to gain Allah’s contentment.
Further, al-Halabi emphasized that Fatwa represents the applicable aspect of religion since it applies general religious judgments to people’s everyday worldly and religious dealings. In the same vein, the lecturer explained the traits and qualities of a Mufti, which come in two categories: the personal moral traits of a Mufti such as trustworthiness, honesty, justice, and rising above immoralities. The other category has to do with intellectual and pedagogic qualities such as mental well-being, the ability to deduct, and an accurate understanding of the Quran’s objectives and evidence.
