Prof. Mohammad Ad-Duweiny, Deputy of al-Azhar stated that our Islamic heritage is a source of pride and honor due to the great treasures produced by the methodologies that our scholars exerted their utmost efforts to reform and guide society. He emphasized that moderation is al-Azhar’s tool for preserving heritage and has adopted it as its hallmark because it is an extension of Islam’s moderation, which respects both reason and text.
During his speech at the seminar on Al-Azhar’s Role in Preserving Islamic Scientific Heritage at the Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) in Indonesia, the Deputy of al-Azhar pointed out that what distinguishes the Azhari approach is the continuous chain of transmission, as relying solely on books often leads to more mistakes than correct interpretations. He also noted that a key feature of the Azhari methodology is the nobility of its subject matter, as it is connected to the sciences of Sharia and language, and related to Allah. Additionally, its comprehensiveness relies on reason and transmission, as well as documentation and verification of the accuracy of statements.
Additionally, Prof. Ad-Duweiny added that Azharis employ reason in its interaction with heritage, neither rejecting it nor being overly intolerant about it. instead, they seek to understand its meaning and comprehend its content in a way that benefits society. The Azhari methodology ensures societal security, so it is essential to respect different opinions. We instill in our students, teaching them to accept diverse ideas by studying the flawed to recognize them and the correct ones to implement them. For his part, Prof. Jamhari Makruf, Rector of Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII), expressed his gratitude to al-Azhar and its Grand Imam, Prof. Ahmad at-Tayyeb, for their valuable services to the Islamic nation and their efforts in supporting the university with professors specializing in Quranic exegesis and Hadith. He noted that the university attracts students from many countries and emphasized that al-Azhar’s support will help it meet the needs of Islamic communities and become an important center of civilization
