
Prof. Shouman: The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Values Scientific and Cultural Relations with Indonesia and Pays Particular Attention to International Students

The delegation of the World Organization for al-Azhar Graduates, headed by His Eminence Prof. Abbas Shouman, President of the Organization and Secretary-General of the Council of Senior Scholars, met with Ms. Khofifah Indar Parawansa, Governor of East Java, to discuss the role of al-Azhar graduates in promoting Islamic tolerance and combating extremism.
For his part, Prof. Shouman emphasized the pride that His Eminence, the Grand Imam Prof. Ahmad at-Tayyeb, takes in the academic and cultural relations with Indonesia, which have made al-Azhar a destination for Indonesian students. These students benefit from its sciences and return to their homeland as torches of knowledge and light, spreading the moderate Azhari approach. He pointed out that the Grand Imam pays special attention to the care of international students at al-Azhar ash-Sharif, consistently directing that they be provided with all necessary support during their studies, and ensuring that bridges of communication are extended between them and al-Azhar after graduation.
Prof. Shouman added that the relationship between Egypt and Indonesia is a historical one, both at the official and popular levels, stressing that the World Organization for al-Azhar Graduates is working to promote moderation and spread the moderate Azhari approach globally through its graduates around the world.
Furthermore, Prof. Salama Dawood, President of al-Azhar University and Vice-President of the Organization, praised the commitment of the Indonesian students and their eagerness to study at al-Azhar. He also commended the role of the Organization’s branch in Indonesia for strengthening the connection between al-Azhar and its graduates.
Additionally, the Governor of East Java emphasized that Egypt is an ancient country, and Indonesia is proud to cooperate with it in various fields. She expressed her appreciation for the efforts of His Eminence, the Grand Imam Prof. Ahmad at-Tayyeb, in spreading the true teachings of Islam and caring for international students worldwide, especially Indonesian students. He has spared no effort in supporting them and providing all the necessary means to help them successfully and excellently complete their studies.
She said, “We are proud that our sons belong to al-Azhar ash-Sharif, and we are committed to sending them to al-Azhar to learn the religion in its spirit of moderation and balance.”
