Launching the “Youth for Change and Sustainable Development” Initiative at Al-Azhar Graduates Organization in Cooperation with Franciscans

Through cooperation between the World Organization for al-Azhar Graduates and the Franciscan Cultural Center, the Oikos Young initiative—aimed at promoting dialog and collaboration between different cultures—was launched through a training program entitled “Youth for Change and Sustainable Development.”

The program focuses on environmental, economic, and social issues within Mediterranean countries.

The launch of the initiative was attended by Major General Wael Bakhit, Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Organization; Prof. Abdul Dayyem Nussair, Secretary General of the Organization and Advisor to the Grand Imam; Prof. Mohammad al-Mahrsawi, President of al-Azhar International Academy for Training Imams, Preachers, and Fatwa Researchers; Father Mourad Maglaa, Regional President of the Franciscan Friars in Egypt; along with a group of professors and deans from the faculties of al-Azhar University and a high-level delegation from the Franciscan Order, in the presence of fifty Egyptian Azhari students.

Notably, Prof. Abdul Dayyem Nussair emphasized that the Organization is committed to ongoing cooperation with all entities and centers that support dialog and peaceful coexistence among peoples, in a manner that fosters integration and promotes noble values and principles. He also praised the collaboration with the Franciscan Cultural Center.

Furthermore, Prof. Al-Mahrasawi stated that Islam is a religion that advocates cooperation, mutual understanding, and the cultivation of virtuous values. He added that al-Azhar, through all its institutions, actively promotes dialog and collaboration between different cultures.

Moreover, Father Mourad Maglaa stated that the Franciscan Center always welcomes fruitful cooperation with al-Azhar Graduates Organization to promote dialog and establish shared pathways for cooperation in a spirit of love and mutual acceptance.

Father Francisco Zacca provided an overview of “Oikos,” explaining that it is an innovative model of higher education within the International Academy, focusing on a multicultural vision for education and training in its mission

It is worth noting that Prof. Mohammad Abdul Rahman, a professor at al-Azhar University, emphasized that religion plays a significant and essential role in supporting and promoting sustainable development across various aspects of life, particularly in advancing social justice and environmental preservation.

Paolo Cancelli also expressed gratitude to the Organization for the warm reception and the opportunity to participate in the meeting.
