The branch of the World Organization for al-Azhar Graduates in Somalia held an awareness lecture titled “The Issue of Women’s Inheritance,” as part of its ongoing educational and awareness efforts for students of the Mustansiriya Institute. The lecture was delivered by Sheikh Abdul Rashid, a member of the branch, who explained that Islam grants women their full right to inheritance, after they had been deprived of it during the Jahiliyyah within a fair and balanced system that considers the financial responsibilities and familial duties of both men and women.
He addressed the misconceptions surrounding the fairness of the inheritance system in Islam, emphasizing that claims of women being oppressed in matters of inheritance stem from a misunderstanding of Shariah provisions. He affirmed that the divine distribution of inheritance is founded on wisdom and justice, not on preference between the sexes. The lecture was well received by female students, who appreciated the academically grounded clarifications it offered, as well as the depth of Shariah’s insight into human reality and societal needs.
