
With full submission to the decree of Allah, Prof. Ahmad at-Tayyeb, the Grand Imam of al-Azhar ash-Sharif, mourns the passing of the esteemed Malaysian Islamic thinker, Prof. Sayyed Mohammad Naquib al-Attas. His passing marks the end of a distinguished academic career dedicated to the service of Islamic thought.
Al-Azhar affirms that the deceased was a luminary of Islamic scholarship in the modern era. His prolific writings and publications enriched Islamic philosophy and profoundly shaped intellectual discourse on identity, civilization, and the synthesis of tradition and modernity. As al-Azhar honors this prominent figure, it extends sincere condolences to his honorable family and to the scholars and students of knowledge in Malaysia and throughout the Islamic world. We pray that Almighty Allah envelops the deceased in His vast mercy, rewards him greatly for the knowledge he imparted to the Ummah, and grants his loved ones patience and solace. {‘Surely we belong to God, and to Him we will return.’}
