- Performing prayer on time is a great means of nearness to Allah and the best act to Allah, as our Prophet (PBUH) said: “Whoever comes with the five daily prayers on the Day of Resurrection, having maintained their wudu (ablution), offered them on time, performed their rukoo‘(bowing) and sujood (prostration), thinking that it is a right for Allah upon him, is saved from the fire.” [Ahmad]
- Whoever missed a prayer due to sleeping, forgetting, or other causes, must pray it when they can. As Anas Ibn Malik narrated, the Prophet (PBUH) said: “If anyone forgets a prayer or oversleeps, he should observe it when he remembers it, there is no expiation for it except that.” [Agreed upon]
- It is permissible to make up missed obligatory prayers at any time of the day or night, and there is no expiation for them except to make them up.
- Whoever missed prayers in a day, should make them up in order. However, if the missed prayers exceed five, the sequence is no longer required.”
- Whoever was negligent in performing prayers for a period of their life, then repented, should estimate the duration they were negligent in prayers, and then make up for the missed prayers. They may perform every current obligatory prayer with missed one or make up for entire consecutive days of prayers at any time during the day or night.
- The virtue of voluntary prayers, and compensating for any deficiency that may occur in obligatory prayers, although increasing them does not suffice for making up for missed prayers, according to al-Mukhtar for Fatwas.
May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad
and all his family and companions. All praise and thanks be to the Lord of the worlds.
